Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New & Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, will inaugurate a state-of-the-art Electric Vehicle (EV) Testing Facility at the Alipore Regional Laboratory in Kolkata on September 10, 2025. The event will be held in New Delhi.

The new facility is equipped with advanced infrastructure to conduct comprehensive testing of EV batteries and components. It will cover areas such as electrical safety, FCC/ISED compliance, functional safety, durability, climate performance (IP, UV, corrosion), as well as mechanical and material safety, including flammability and glow wire testing.

By offering internationally recognised testing and certification services, the facility is expected to support EV battery manufacturers, particularly in eastern India, ensuring product safety, performance, and regulatory compliance. It will also serve as a national benchmark for EV quality assurance, helping manufacturers detect faults early, improve reliability, and meet stringent safety standards—ultimately boosting consumer confidence in EVs.

The initiative underlines the government’s commitment to building a robust EV ecosystem, reducing import dependence, and strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities. With this addition, the National Test House (NTH) further establishes its role as a key enabler in India’s transition to clean mobility and in building world-class quality assurance infrastructure.

As India pushes towards its target of achieving 30% EV penetration by 2030, ensuring rigorous testing, validation, and certification of EVs and their components will remain crucial to supporting sustainable transportation goals.
