The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a total outlay of Rs 6,520 crore—including an additional Rs 1,920 crore—for the ongoing Central Sector Scheme Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY) for the period of the 15th Finance Commission cycle (2021–22 to 2025–26).
The approval includes:
Rs 1,000 crore for establishing 50 Multi-Product Food Irradiation Units under the Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure (ICCVAI) scheme and setting up 100 NABL-accredited Food Testing Laboratories (FTLs) under the Food Safety and Quality Assurance Infrastructure (FSQAI) component.
Rs 920 crore for sanctioning various projects under other PMKSY component schemes during the same period.
Both ICCVAI and FSQAI are demand-driven components of PMKSY. Expressions of Interest (EOIs) will be issued to invite proposals from eligible entities across India. Projects will be selected following detailed scrutiny based on existing guidelines.
The 50 irradiation units are projected to create a food preservation capacity of 20–30 lakh metric tonnes annually, depending on the type of food processed. Additionally, the 100 new FTLs in the private sector will boost infrastructure for food safety testing, ensuring compliance with quality standards and the supply of safe, certified food products.
